Class Description:

Is your Pistol Permit currently restricted to “target”, “hunting” or “business protection”?

Would you like to obtain quality, street proven advanced threat management training to assist in your upgrade request to an “unrestricted” Pistol Permit?

If the answer to the above is “yes”, then “Unrestricted Upgrade 1: Threat Management for Pistol Permit Holders” is the ideal class for you!

In 2002 I developed and ran the first unrestricted upgrade class to be offered in Western New York. Since then I have continued to update and improve on the original course.

“Unrestricted Upgrade 1: Threat Management for Pistol Permit Holders” is an 8 hour class that will prepare you for the realities of criminal encounters as well as the legal, social and emotional aftermath following a use of force incident. Here are just a few of the areas you’ll be trained in:

  1. Law & ethics in lawful personal protection
  2. Developing a winning mindset for survival
  3. Psychology of violent criminal offenders
  4. Situational awareness, avoidance & escape
  5. Application of the Recognize – Avoid – Deter - Stop intervention model
  6. Verbal commands & communication
  7. The use of force continuum
  8. Appropriate use and relative effectiveness of defensive equipment
  9. Interacting with Police
  10. Post incident management
  11. Selecting a lawyer
  12. Psychological & social aftermath of critical incidents

Carrying a handgun for lawful personal protection requires that you actively understand and apply a number of skills. Remember that with increased power comes increased responsibility. Thus, power and responsibility must be balanced.

This class covers important core areas that Pistol Permit holders must understand before they carry a concealed handgun in public. The topics, supported by an extensive array of CCTV footage of actual crimes, are expressly designed to be the ideal training experience for responsible private citizens who wish to be armed in public.

In 1999 I became the first trainer in Western New York to be certified as a Judicious Use of Deadly Physical Force Instructor (see my CV). This, combined with a number of related life experiences and training certifications within the field, allows me to offer an unparalleled and high quality training class to Pistol Permit holders.

I developed the “Unrestricted Upgrade / Threat Management” class with clear goals in mind: a) Prepare the Permit holder to deal realistically and correctly with the types of critical incidents offered by violent criminal offenders and, b) Prepare that person for the aftermath of these types of incidents.

Once you complete the “Unrestricted Upgrade / Threat Management” class you may apply for your unrestricted upgrade.

Later, if you would like to take more advanced training that builds on the “Unrestricted Upgrade / Threat Management” class, additional classes will be available to you at a future date.

Some key points about this training:

  • I developed and held my first “Threat Management for Pistol Permit Holders” class in 2002. This was done in an effort to offer high quality lawful personal protection training to local residents in Western New York.
  • This class has evolved over the years to create a unique and modular approach to the training experience. You’ll begin with an emphasis on criminal, civil and administrative aspects of lawful personal protection, ethics, mindset, proper management and aftermath of critical incidents, etc. All of which is designed to maximize your ability to recognize, avoid, deter and stop a violent criminal encounter.
  • This is a unique, modular training program that is intended to allow you to take one class and apply for your upgrade. Depending on your training needs you may take additional classes that build on the first Threat Management class.
  • This is the first series of classes in the U.S. to combine a Threat Management training class with a Tactical Medicine class in a basic training course series. As such, this better prepares you for the reality of emergency medical self & buddy rescue within the arena of high risk armed encounters.

Remember that no training class will guarantee your approval for an “unrestricted” upgrade. The reason for this is based on the fact that County Judges involved with Pistol Permit issuance always reserve the right to either grant or withhold upgrades. However, you clearly establish two facts when you take this class:

  1. You demonstrate that you sought out and obtained high quality, advanced training in a course dealing with Threat Management and the judicious use of Deadly Physical Force for private citizens. This establishes your commitment to responsibility within this field.

  2. The training you receive will give you the critical edge for success in a lawful personal protection encounter.
